How Long Should My Toddler Sit On The Potty?
I’ve read different sites that say you shoud make your toddler sit on the potty for a few minutes each hour but they don’t specify how long. I want this to be a positive experience and if I make him sit there until he acually goes, we’ll likely be sitting there for A LONG TIME and end up being fussy about it and not wanting to go. How long should I let him sit on it each hour, whether or not he actually goes?

until they want to get up…. I work at a day care, and this one little girl will sit on the potty all day if you let her. its so sweet, but we give her about 30 min to do what she’s gotta do, and then pull her off. most kids won’t sit longe than 10. so unless they wanna sit all day, let them decide.
again potty training has to be done when they are ready, and on their schedule.
remember repititon repitition repitition.. that is how this age group learns. make her a potty song, so every time she potty’s or is on the potty sing it together.
My Wife and I took our Children to the potty every Hour and they would usually do their thing within a few minutes! It was trial and error, until they got into a habit of going on their own! There were however many errors, although we always praised their efforts! More than anything else, you need patience! Good-Luck!
I think when people put there baby’s on the potty every hour, they aren’t potty training the toddler they are training them selves. You will have much better luck if you wait till you child is ready and wants to use the potty.
But if you are going to do it this way, I would say when they wanted to get up let them get up, or else they wont want to sit there if they know they HAVE to sit there for a certain amount of time.
EX. My daughter was potty trained, but while at her grandmothers she had an accident, her grandmother made her sit on the potty, and when I arrived to pick her up she was crying on the potty with grandma making her sit there, My daughter was no longer potty trained after that for 6 months!!!!
Good Luck with Potty Training!
when we were starting out with our girls, i had their favorite books next to the toilet. We would read 3-4 kid books. I also had my sodoku puzzle magazine when they weren’t interested.
If I knew it was coming (major farting from my child and you can see she would rather go in her diaper), she would sit until she got the job done.
But if it didn’t happen for 5 minutes, I would let her go and give her a big hug for trying. Always positive!!!
-two girls potty trained. Thank goodness!!!!
